Tick off another one of the "over 200 new features" pending in iOS 5: the latest version of Apple's mobile OS will support full 1080p video—up from 720p, according to 9to5mac.
Any A4-powered (or higher) iOS device—iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4, and the fourth-gen iPod touch—running iOS 5 will reportedly have the capability to both render and export video at 1080p, the blog said.
While developers can only output at 720p in iOS 4, the iOS 5 media framework now includes a 1,920-by-1,080 video export option. The change is found in the export preset strings of AVAsset, which, 9to5mac explains, is "an abstract class of AV Foundation framework which has been around since iOS 4." Developers tap the AVAsset class to manage media files, including the retrieval of input streams from devices and the manipulation of video clips in real-time capture and playback.
If you're running the developer preview of iOS 5, 9to5mac reports tht you can already load 1080p content. The video automatically scales a 1080p file to your display resolution (that's 960-by-640 in the case of the iPhone 4). The upgrade should prove little hassle to developers: a small modification to existing code will allow developers to support the 1080p video export setting.
Upscale video support bodes well for the forthcoming iPhone, which has been rumored to tote an 8-megapixel camera, among other things. After all, why bother upgrading iOS video support if users can't capture full-HD content? There may even be promise for Apple's favorite "hobby" product: An iOS 5-equipped, A4-clad AppleTV could (finally) bring 1080p to your HDTV this fall.
