Sony shook up the compact camera market with a couple of big releases last year. The RX100 put a 1-inch image sensor and a zoom lens into a pocketable body, and the RX1 married a full-frame image sensor to a 35mm f/2 lensand can also slide into your pocket. The company just announced two new cameras to join the RX family, but made it clear that the RX100 and RX1 were staying in the lineup for the foreseeable future.
The new RX100 II is largely similar to the original iteration of the camera. It still uses a 1-inch image sensor and a 28-100mm f/1.8-4.9 Carl Zeiss Vario-SonnarT* lens. The 20-megapixel image sensor is now backlit, which Sony claims will provide a 1-stop improvement in noise controlwhich will help when shooting in low light. The camera also features integrated Wi-Fi with NFC pairing supportso you can transfer images directly to your iOS or Android device and post them to social networks while out and about. You can also use your phone or tablet as a remote viewfinder, with the ability to trigger the camera's shutter.
The other changes are more noticeable. The rear 3-inch LCD is now hinged; it can go up 84° or down 45°. And there's a multi-interface hot shoe that provides the ability to mount an external flash or Sony's OLED electronic viewfinder. Video performance is slightly tweaked, with 1080p24 available in addition to the 1080p60 that the original version of the RX100 supports. Also new to software is a step-zoom setting; this allows you to set the control ring to zoom to 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, or 100mm equivalent focal lengths, skipping the intermediate steps between them.
The Cyber-shot RX100 II will be available in July and is expected to sell for around $750that's $100 more than the RX100.
Also announced was a new version of the full-frame RX1, dubbed the RX1R. For all intents and purposes, it's the exact same cameraa digital compact with a 24-megapixel full-frame image sensor and a Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2 lens. The only change is the removal of the optical low-pass filter. This filter robs images of some very fine detail in order to eliminate the possibility of color moiré patterns appearing in photos. These sometimes appear when photographing fabrics, feathers, and other textured objects. Many photographers prefer to attack color moiré with software when it does occur, especially landscape shooters who seldom encounter it. The RX1R is priced the same as the RX1, about $2,800, and will also go on sale in July.
