Ubisoft Database Hack; NYC Gets .nyc; Tesla Petition Earns White House Response

Posted on 17:32 by Unknown
Ubisoft Montreal Watch Dogs

Topping tech headlines on Tuesday was a Ubisoft hack that exposed user names, email addresses, and encrypted passwords, but no financial data.

The attackers exploited one of Ubisoft's websites to gain unauthorized access to online systems, the company said. Ubisoft shut down the hackers' access, but discovered that they'd infiltrated the company's account database. Ubisoft is recommending that all account holders change their passwords.

Meanwhile, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) awarded New York City the .nyc top-level domain, making the Big Apple one of the first cities in the world to be granted a location-specific domain. Now, New York businesses and residents can apply for their own .nyc website, starting later this year. To qualify, registrants must have a New York City address or a "bona fide presence" in the city.

In other news, a WhiteHouse.gov online petition calling for Tesla to be allowed to sell its electric cars directly to consumers has topped 100,000 signatures, meaning the White House must issue a formal reply. State legislatures and car dealers have been fighting Tesla's efforts to sell its electric cars directly rather than through dealers.
