Microsoft has topped 100,000 apps in its Windows 8 store, about eight months after the operating system launched.
The software giant announced its milestone Monday on Twitter, posting on the Windows App Builders account, "Thanks for a great \\build! Just passed 100k apps in the Windows Store." A similar message was later added to the Windows account.
Microsoft has been steadily growing the number of apps in its Windows 8 store. Ahead of last month's Build developer conference, for example it added social video editor Vyclone and the music-streaming service Vevo, as well as Foursquare, Rockmelt, Rhapsody, and OpenTable. Flipboard and Facebook apps are also on tap.
Just last week, Redmond reported about 80,000 available Windows 8 apps, but managed to fulfill CEO Steve Ballmer's prediction that the store would pass the 100,000 mark within days — 100,168 apps, to be exact, based on MetroStore Scanner.
Windows 8 was released in October, and just recently eclipsed Microsoft's Vista OS in terms of usage, wrapping up June with 5.1 percent market share — still far behind Windows 7 and Windows XP, which carry a collective 82 percent of the operating system market.
All 100,000+ apps will be compatible with the new Windows 8.1 — the first major update to Microsoft's new operating system, expected later this year.
