The pocket-sized, state-of-the-art CTEK Multi US 7002 battery charger is in a class of its own when it comes to peculiarity. Equipped with four different modes for charging, this model is just one example of how far technology has come today. Before you get too excited though, do note that this battery charger cannot jump-start batteries.
The CTEK Multi US 7002 battery charger is compatible with most motorcycle, car and boat batteries, including 6- and 12-volt Automated Glass Mat (AGM), gel cell and Wet types. Along with its compatibility with most batteries, the greatest feature of this battery charger comes in its ability to charge batteries in four different modes depending on the mode that you select. Here is a description of each charge mode and what it is designed to do:
Normal: In this mode, a battery will go through seven phases of charging beginning with the desulphation phase and ending with the maintenance charging phase while being charged at 14.4 volts.
Snowflake: This mode is recommended for any battery-charging jobs that occur below 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Similar to the normal mode, this mode also includes the same seven phases of charging, and batteries are charged at 14.7 volts.
Supply: The supply, or maintenance mode, is the setting normally used for batteries that must maintain a high capacity at all times, including batteries for golf carts and floor sweepers. The charge at this mode includes a constant voltage level of 13.6 volts and a current up to 7 amps.
Recond: This mode is specifically designed to recover deep discharged and flooded batteries using a constant current charge of 1.5 amps and a maximum voltage level of 15.7 volts.
Unfortunately, this unit is incapable of charging deep-cell cycle batteries, according to the owners manual and has no jumpstarting capability either. This inability to jump batteries sets the Multi US 7002 at a disadvantage, and is a feature that CTEK may want to look into including with future versions of the model.
Logically, this battery charger is not very durable in comparison to other models. Being small and unprotected does have its downsides. Thankfully, CTEK has included a five-year warranty from the date of purchase with this model in case any parts become defective or broken.
As for the upside of being small, it is really, really, easy to store and carry this battery charger around. Weighing a mere, 1.7 pounds and standing 2 inches tall, spanning 3.5 inches wide and 8.5 inches in length, its surprising that this minute object can even charge a AA battery, let alone batteries found in cars and boats.
The CTEK Multi US 7002 also tries to make life a little easier for you, since four different modes of charging can make things confusing for anyone. Lighted indicators show which phase of charging the battery is in if the unit is set to the Normal or Snowflake modes, and push-button charge controls make it easy to select the exact mode of charging you need for a particular job. Along with these features, this battery charger also turns itself off once a charge is complete to ensure that a battery does not become overcharged.
If you consider yourself an inexperienced user of battery chargers, you can breathe a sigh of relief from the fact that this unit includes a reverse-polarity detector and indicator. If you accidentally reverse the charge connection (by putting the positive cable on a batterys negative terminal, for instance, or vice versa) the Multi US 7002 will respond with a warning light that indicates something is wrong. This battery charger also includes insulated and spark-resistant jumper cables and clamps.
The CTEK Multi US 7002 is about as cool as it gets when it comes to portable battery chargers. With that said, its hard to rank it higher due to its lack of jump-starting capabilities and options.
