Images and video purporting to show LG's upcoming Optimus G2 smartphone turned up on the Internet on Tuesday, courtesy of Engadget and a pseudonymous leaker called 4Leakz.
LG this week teased an Aug. 7 event in New York to lift the curtain on the Optimus G2, the follow up to the original Optimus G smartphone. The leaked images and video show a design for the G2 that features more rounded edges than its predecessor and "very little bezel, making it appear near edge-to-edge," Engadget noted.
The tech blog further reported that the upcoming phone features a 5.2-inch, 1080p display, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, and that the "Sprint variant" in the photos was running Google's Android 4.2.2 "Jelly Bean" mobile operating system. With the Optimus G2, LG is "foregoing the three capacitive Android navigation buttons featured on the original G in favor of an onscreen (stock Android-like) arrangement," according to Engadget.
Perhaps the most iconoclastic feature on the new handset is the presence of physical system volume buttons on the back of the devicea break from the standard practice of placing the volume rocker on the side of phones.
LG has already revealed that its new handset will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 processor, which was first unveiled in January. The Snapdragon 800 will also power Samsung's LTE-A version of the Galaxy S 4 and Sony's 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra.
Engadget said the leak it received confirms the presence of a Snapdragon 800 in the upcoming Optimus G2, adding that its source claimed the processor inside the phone clocks at 2.3GHz and is "paired with 2GB of RAM."
PCMag ran a slew of benchmarks on the Snapdragon 800 in June, and got a 405 on Basemark OS, which is 33 percent faster than the Galaxy S 4 at 294. There was also a major boost in program launch times.
The existing Optimus G sports a 4.7-inch 720p IPS display and oversized 2100mAh battery, yet measures in at a slim 5.19 by 2.71 by 0.33 inches and weighs 5.1 ounces. The Optimus G Pro phablet, meanwhile, features a 5.5-inch, 1,920-by-1,080 full HD IPS display, with 440 pixels per inch.
