If you are an Xbox 360 racing gamer, you may already have heard of the Ferrari 458 Italia gaming wheel because there are relatively few wheel and pedal combinations designed to work specifically with the Xbox. The wheel itself is patterned after the actual Ferrari 458 Italia steering wheel; it's just a slightly smaller version. This wheel and pedal set will also work on a PC and requires Vista or Windows 7.
Unfortunately, this quality steering wheel and pedal kit has no force feedback or rumble. Without the rumble effect when the virtual tires are skidding on a rough road, it's hard to immerse yourself in the game. Using the bungee cord centering system, this wheel offers a good amount of resistance on tight turns and will automatically center. It handles smoothly, but we hope Thrustmaster develops an updated wheel with feedback.
This gaming racing wheel shines in its design. The quality-rubberized grip is very comfortable, and because it weighs in at 8.4 pounds, the peripheral has a sturdy feel. The wheel is not built exactly like a gaming controller; instead, its main action buttons are spread across the left and right side of the wheel frame. The pedals look fantastic and even give differing levels of tension. You won't find a surplus of buttons, but every button is clearly displayed and has a purpose.
Customization is not the focus of this wheel. There are eight buttons in total, and they can be reprogrammed depending on the game. The adjustable dial will let you switch camera views. Beyond those aspects, there is little room for adjustment as you play.
Thrustmaster excels when it comes to help and support issues. The company offers a limited two-year warranty and can be reached by phone or email. There are also FAQs specific to each product, and Thrustmaster recommends you start there for troubleshooting help.
Thrustmaster is a large player in the PC steering wheel game. The Ferrari 458 Italia wheel and pedal set focuses on PC and Xbox 360 gamers. It's a very comfortable wheel and looks fantastic, but it suffers from a lack rumble and force feedback, so the gaming experience is less realistic and immersive.
