Maplin has become the first major high-street retailer in the UK to sell 3D printers with the launch of the The Velleman K8200. The £700 kit is available in selected stores from today onwards, as well as for pre-order on the Maplin website.
The K8200 3D printer is not much larger than a standard paper printer and is built with an aluminium frame. It includes the Repetier product design software and five metres of PLA (polylactic acid), the 3mm plastic wire used to print 3D objects.
3D printing works by melting plastic filament, then building it up in fine plastic layers to create solid objects. The first step is to digitally create the 3D object design by using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. This design is then transmitted to the 3D printer to build the design in plastic.
The length of time it takes to print a 3D object depends on the size and complexity of the design. For example, a phone case takes around 30 minutes to print, while larger and more complicated items would take longer.
"From prototypes for new inventions to intricate models; 3D printing opens up a whole world of possibilities for creating replacement parts, bespoke toys or objects d'art. The only limit is the size of the printable area which is 20cm," a Velleman representative said following the announcement.
