GameStop US has stopped taking pre-orders for Sony's PlayStation 4, despite previously saying it would be vastly increasing its allocation of the device ahead of launch.
Officially unveiled at a February preview event, the PlayStation 4 is due to go head-to-head with Microsoft's Xbox One later this year. Retailers are taking pre-orders for the consoles now, but Sony has previously warned that demand may outstrip supply and leave latecomers without a device at launch.
Despite this, GameStop issued an internal memo saying that significantly more PS4 consoles would be available to pre-order than Xbox One units. The memo even said Sony was making an "unlimited" number of pre-order slots available to the company, with staff being instructed to take as many pre-orders as possible.
Now, GameStop has stopped PS4 pre-orders altogether. Speaking to Game Informer, the company confirmed that in-store reservations have stopped due to "high demand for the system". The on-line reservation system now shows the system as sold out.
Sony hasn't released figures for the number of consoles being produced, but it was believed that it was greatly outpacing Microsoft's Xbox One production with up to ten times as many PS4s being readied for launch. With GameStop, one of the biggest retailers for games and consoles in the US, stopping pre-orders so early, it now seems that stock shortages are almost guaranteed for both consoles.
Sony has not commented on GameStop's decision to stop pre-orders of its console.
