3 Crucial Questions to Ask When Purchasing a Dishwasher

Posted on 16:42 by Unknown

Buying a new dishwasher shouldn't be a stressful experience, but with as many as there are to choose from, there's the potential for some anxiety and confusion. There is a lot to consider when you compare dishwashers, but there are only a few crucial questions you should ask before making the purchasing plunge. Therefore, we've outlined the most important questions you should ask when purchasing a dishwasher to minimize that stress and ensure you get a great dishwasher that you will be happy with.

What makes a dishwasher energy efficient?
When looking for a dishwasher, you should highly consider an energy efficient model because it won't only save you some Benjamin's, but it will help the environment as well. In order for a dishwasher to earn the Energy Star label, the amount of place settings, energy consumption per year and gallons per cycle are taken into account. According to Energy Star (a program that works with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy), a standard sized dishwasher should be able to hold greater than or equal to eight place settings and consume less than 295 kilowatt-hours (kwh) per year. The higher the place setting and the lower the energy consumption per year, the more energy efficient the dishwasher will be.

How much will it cost you yearly?
Each dishwasher is equipped with an EnergyGuide label. The EnergyGuide label is the bright yellow paper or sticker attached to your appliance. This is provided by the Federal Trade Commission and will give you an estimate of how much your dishwasher will cost you every year to operate, along with an estimate of how much energy your dishwasher will use each year. The EnergyGuide cost per year for dishwashers is estimated on use of an electric water heater.

In general, an energy efficient dishwasher can range in cost per year from $20 to $50. The more energy efficient your dishwasher is, the lower the cost per year will be for you. The energy usage will vary among dishwashers, but the same fact remains, the lower the energy use (measured in kwh per year) the dishwasher consumes, the more energy efficient your dishwasher is.

How loud will the dishwasher be?
We've all been there: You've finished dinner and loaded the dishwasher just in time to sit down and watch your favorite sitcom, but your dishwasher is running, so in order to hear your television you must crank up the volume. Dishwasher technology has come a long way in terms of the sound level of the appliance, making them extremely quiet. Some, so quiet you can't even tell they are running. In general, a dishwasher's dBA rating can range from 42-70, the lower the number, the quieter the dishwasher will be. Dishwashers in the 40 or 50 range are relatively quiet.

Surly there is more that you should consider when purchasing a dishwasher, such as cost, color, size, etc., but these three questions are crucial when you're looking into purchasing that new dishwasher. With the answer to these three questions, you will be well informed on how your dishwasher will function.
