These speakers offer great sound clarity, even cranked up to extreme volumes. While they can get a little bright and hollow sounding once you hit a certain volume, when they are properly powered, there is no distortion and you don't lose any of the sound quality. The sensitivity is 89.5 decibels, which means that it doesn't take a lot of power to get a decent volume on the speakers. The MX650 speakers have a relatively low power handling, meaning that they can use less power to accomplish the same sound. Additionally, the wide range found in the frequency response helps provide really good bass at 55 hertz and adds a more complete sound with the supersonic frequencies that go up to 26,000 hertz. The tweeter is under an inch in diameter, which means the sound is not quite a bright as in other speakers.

The JL Audio MX650 is designed like the standard boat speakers that come pre-installed on many boats, with the standard four-hole mounting system. The grille covers the same amount of space as most pre-installed boat stereo systems so they fit perfectly into the pre-existing holes. The included stainless steel hardware makes for a quick and clean install. When purchasing these speakers you also have to option of picking either white or titanium grilles that come in a classic or sport style. The classic grilles are more enclosed and better help protect the speaker, while the sport grilles are really just for aesthetics. The titanium style speakers do cost a little more than the standard white, ones and the sport grille style does require six screws as opposed to four, so depending on your existing setup, you may have to drill more holes to install that option.
The materials are durable and have been tested thoroughly. The basket is made of a polymer material that was created to resist corrosion and fading so that your product continues to look its best for years. The speaker is also sealed to protect the magnet assembly and prevent water damage.

JL Audio offers a two-year warranty on the speakers, and it is a limited warranty and covers only defects in the product. It is also solely at the company's discretion to repair or replace the products. There is a customer service phone line and an email address, but JL Audio prefers to do a lot of its customer service through its dealers. The galleries page may be of use because you can look at installation on other boats and see if there is anything there to inspire your install.
The JL Audio MX650 has a small tweeter that gives a little bit of a different sound to it, but it still performs well at high volumes. It is made to last for years, but it also gives you some style options so you can customize it for your boat. For sound quality and style options, the MX650 is one of the best marine speakers around.
